What is Transformation?

God’s Spirit calls us to transform ourselves to meet the challenges before us. How to we do this? We do it together! The Transformation Team is leading us on a journey to discern the four pillars under our Umbrella of Congregational Life: Core Values, Bedrock Beliefs, Motivating Vision, Key Mission.

This is the beginning of a discernment process to identify who The Plymouth Church is today, where God is calling us into the world in new ways, and how we will adapt to this changing landscape.

There will be a variety of ways for you to join in the process: house meetings, surveys, workshops and discussion groups at church to include your feedback along the journey. We invite (and expect) you to join in as much and as often as you can. God can’t work this transformation without us! All of us!!

Resources

Our work is grounded first in prayer and spiritual growth. Each week, our meeting begins in reflection and conversation. Our work is guided by several resources.

Canoeing the Mountains, Tod Bolsinger

Explorers Lewis and Clark had to adapt. While they had prepared to find a waterway to the Pacific Ocean, instead they found themselves in the Rocky Mountains. Drawing from his extensive experience as a pastor and consultant, Bolsinger brings decades of expertise in guiding churches and organizations through uncharted territory. If you're going to scale the mountains of ministry, you need to leave behind canoes and find new navigational tools

Moving Off the Map, Thomas G. Bandy

Are there practical tools that have helped churches change? Yes! This book offers processes and tools to help congregations identify their strengths, weaknesses, and unhelpful habits. These processes can help a congregation shift attitudes, deepen spiritual awareness, receive Biblical visions, and shape ministries for the future.

To offer an entry point, Pastor Greg created this guide. This resource was meant to lay out the complexity of the situation and the possibility for renewal. If nothing else, it aims to remind us that The Plymouth Church is not alone in the challenges we face. In many ways, we are well-positioned in this moment, having succeeded so well for so many years. Still, the landscape has changed and it’s time to adapt and grow. Or, as Jesus might say, “Leave your nets, and follow me.”
